PixelNation

PixelNation is a two-week summer video workshop in digital art-making for teens ages 11 to 18 that focuses on non-realistic and experimental video techniques. Students view and analyze experimental films and then create stylistic videos of their own based on a common theme.

This inquiry-based, interactive method not only transmits knowledge but also aims at developing creative talent. The faculty encourage each student to discover, explore and develop all aspects of their talents, find their unique creative language and start to speak in an authentic artistic voice.

For the first week, the students screen and critique various styles of experimental video and film, are introduced to video technology, and learn basic filmmaking techniques. During the second week, the students begin their creative exploration by writing a script, shooting their video project, and editing their project into a finished film.

The summer's activities culminate with a film festival open to family, friends, and the community at large. At the end of the summer, students will have a completed shooting script, and a finished video.

The faculty includes professional filmmakers with backgrounds in writing, acting and videography. The instructors have extensive experience in teaching youth, and a solid grounding in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in the Fine and Performing Arts.

Class size is typically twelve students in order to help guarantee a high quality learning environment. We will provide four teaching artists, video cameras, lighting and sound equipment, software for editing and mixing sound, and supplies for the film festival.
